Nothing Takes The Place Of You (2012)

Leon Daniels was the leader of the El Venos, a teenaged vocal group that had two hits, “You Won’t Be True” in 1956 and “Geraldine” in 1957. Leon gave me my first real gig playing for the re-formed group of the El Venos while I was in college. I became the El Venos’ regular drummer and recorded an album with them, Vintage Collection in 2002. Leon later released his first solo album in 2004 Oh! What a Wonderful Life on which I played all of the drum tracks.

Sadly, Leon passed away in the spring of 2012. He left a second solo album, which was to become Nothing Takes The Place Of You, waiting in the studio for the finishing touches. Bonedog Records released the Album later in 2012. I contributed my drumming to nearly the whole album including the title track, a cover of Toussaint McCall’s “Nothing Takes The Place Of You”, which happens to be one of my favorite tunes that I had the honor of performing with Leon. I’m very happy to have been able to record that song with Leon before he passed.  It will always make me think of him.

I’ll miss you Leon!
